And here we are, we made it
Here we are, we made it
Growing up in the 1990’s I was a massive WWE fan (it was still called WWF back then). My brother and I would practice the moves on each other, in the process breaking many items around the house. We would even go to our friends’ houses to wrestle each other, breaking many things in those houses too. During that time one of the bad guys was called Hunter Hearst Helmsley, or just Triple H. I watched an episode of wrestling the other day and was surprised to see that he is still around, 30 years later. Old Triple H has stood the test of time it seems.
This is not a wrestling appreciation post, but I do want to talk about three H’s as we quickly approach the end of the year. While listening to a podcast last week, the panel was talking about creating ways to connect with your family over the festive season and one participant mentioned this approach, which I thought was cool. Often we struggle to connect in any meaningful way with the people we only see once or twice a year (at least I do). So if you prefer not to make small talk, here are some things you can focus on:
The First H is for Highlight: Think about your highlight of 2023. You might have more than one or maybe you struggle to think of anything. Ask your family members about theirs. Even if you had a year you would prefer to forget, taking the time to find the good things to be grateful for is always worthwhile.
The Second H is for Hardship: What did you experience this year that was difficult? It doesn’t need to be extreme to “count” – if it challenged you, then it goes on your list. Instead of using this question as something to brag about (there are those families where people like to compete for “who is the biggest victim”), ask yourself and the people you speak to about how they dealt with these challenges. It might be tough for some to talk about, but the things we struggle with are often the things that remind us of our shared humanity.
The Third H is for Hope: What are you hoping for in 2024? A lekker question – this gives us insight into what we find most important. It cuts through the clutter of the many distractions we might be facing and increases our accountability when we can say out loud what we are aiming for in the year to come. Dreaming together about a specific, better future is a great way to connect with yourself and the people around you.
There we go – 2023 is in the books. This will be our final piece for the year – we will be back in early January.
