Are you thinking about your future or your past?

Over the coming weekend pay attention to your words and thoughts and draw this specific distinction:

Are you talking and thinking more about your past or your future?

This matters. Why?

The more you think and talk about your past the more energy you invest there. While is it very important to resolve and process issues that reside in your past, spending all your time and energy there will not move you towards the future you want to experience. Jordan Peterson, the renowned Canadian Psychologist, uses a rule of thumb of 18-months: if something that happened more than 18 months ago still upsets you greatly, it has not been dealt with in a healthy way. This could very easily lead to you getting stuck in the past. It would be a good idea to talk to a trained professional about this.

Start to create a picture of the future you want to have in your mind. Think about what your life could look like, three, five and ten years from now if everything went according to plan. Trace a path that would lead there and begin to move towards that picture – even if you are taking small steps. Be open to the fact that your picture might change, but don’t let that stop you from drawing the outline.

Aim forward. Think about your future. Speak about your future – to yourself and those close to you. Think about what it could look like. And then start moving towards it, today.
