Finding Meaning: Does it lie in reach or impact?

In a world obsessed with likes, follows and mentions it is easy to mistake a wide reach for significant impact. Yes it is true that when Ronaldo chooses water over Coke their stock price falls by billions of dollars. But there is no real lasting value or impact there, necessarily. We were told recently of someone that threw a party because she passed 100 000 followers on TikTok. Congratulations are in order, it seems.

Yes social media has its place. But don’t fall into the trap of thinking that you need to be able to reach thousands of people for your life to matter. Adam Grant (someone with a large following, ironically) tweeted recently:

“Meaning is about making a difference, not having an audience.

It’s better to be valued by a few than to be known by many.

Your contribution is not the scope of your reach. It’s the depth of your impact.

Your legacy is not how many footprints you leave. It’s how long they last.”

Size does not equal significance. Whether in your personal life or in business, these truths hold. Now go and make an impact.
