How Lucky are You?
How Lucky are You?
How would you rate your level of luck?
Have you ever won anything? Or survive an incident that could have gone very wrong? Are you the type of person who attracts lucky breaks, or does good fortune seem to avoid you like the plague?
Just this week, I was standing in my driveway and out of seemingly nowhere, a lightning bolt cracked right above my head! I felt pretty lucky to walk away alive and with clean pants, let me tell you.
After someone commented on him being lucky, Gary Player famously said, “The more I practice, the luckier I get”. Gary doesn’t seem to really believe in luck – he seems to value repetition and practice more. Honestly, I haven’t made up my mind about luck either.
One thing I am absolutely convinced of and find myself repeating often in different conversations is that opportunities come through people. Then I saw this quote by James Clear, the author of Atomic Habits, last week:
“Luck flows through people and travels by conversation. The people you talk to determine the opportunities you find. Keep talking to the same people, keep finding the same opportunities. Start talking to new people, start finding new opportunities. If you want different luck, start walking into different rooms.”
Two weeks ago, I was invited to a cocktail party hosted by my book publisher this past Saturday evening. My initial reaction was to make an excuse why I could not go, because it is a pretty long drive, and I don’t enjoy driving at night. Luckily, I came to my senses shortly after and said yes. At this event, I spoke to a guy who has been living in the same small town as me for four years. Somehow, we have never met. He seems to be a great company, and so does his fiancée. There is a very good chance that I’ve made a new friend.
The next day, I thought about James Clear’s quote – something changed just by going into a different room.
If you find yourself in need of a lucky break, maybe it’s time to make a change and talk to someone new.
