How many days left in this year?
How many days left in this year?
The answer is 166.
It can either fill you with dread or hope.
If it has been a bad year and you’re waiting for it to be over, you have 166 days to endure.
If there are still things you want to get done and opportunities you want to pursue, you have 166 days to make plenty of progress.
You get to choose between dread and hope. The number of days will be the same.
Over the last couple of weeks, I’ve been speaking to coaching clients who are trying to establish healthier habits. Like all of us, they make progress some days and then fall back into their old ways on others. Their default reaction is to want to give up when they can’t do it perfectly. My advice is always the same: Just start again today. And try to create the longest streak of days implementing the new habit you can manage. Then, when you inevitably fall off the wagon, start again.
There is no magic number of how many times you need to repeat something before it sticks and becomes automatic. That will depend on the individual and what you are trying to make stick. But what is true of everybody is, the more times you do it, the more habitual it becomes.
Whatever it might be you want to get done this year, you still have 166 chances to do it. You will likely not do it perfectly, but try to keep track of how many days out of the total you can. One of my favourite features on Strava is when it tells you on New Year’s Eve how many active days you had during the previous year. This year, like every year, I will be aiming to get more than the previous year (It has never been 365 days).
Don’t wait for next year. Start today. The amount of progress you can make in 166 days will blow your mind.
