It’s a kind of Magic

Welcome to the second half of 2026. It has been a tumultuous week in South Africa, to put it mildly

I had the amazing privilege of going to see Disney on Ice with my girls last weekend. I love musicals and Disney, so I was so excited that I woke up very early on a Saturday. It was magical seeing all the little kids dressed up as their favourite Disney characters – picture princesses everywhere! My girls loved it. After the show, I asked them what their favourite parts were. One said the scene with Aladdin and the Genie – it was magical. It made me think how amazing life can be when we actively look for and notice the magic around us. Sure, we can’t wave a wand like Tinker Bell or speak to the oceans like Moana, but there are so many other magical moments if we choose to see them.

This weekend, watching my daughter sit next to me with her eyes full of wonder was a moment I will treasure forever. Having a child fall asleep on your lap, laughing with a friend, sharing a special moment with a loved one, accomplishing a big goal, or simply ticking something off your to-do list – all of these can be magical moments.

Some of my best magical moments were those that shifted the way I think and live. They weren’t necessarily easy or without discomfort and challenge: Giving birth to my girls. Starting our business. Creating and growing a fitness community. My first Two Oceans half-marathon. Helping someone over the line. To name but a few.

The point is: Although we are often surrounded by it, we can choose to find magic in the chaotic or mundane. All we need to do is look for it. (Note from PJ: Hopefully the Springboks can create some magic at Ellis Park this weekend).
