I’ve been meaning to do this for two years

I’ve been meaning to do this for two years

I spent some time on an aeroplane this week, travelling for work. We had a great time spending two days, in person, at a client’s office. I’m typically not one of those chatty passengers, and since I’m still recovering from the flu, I felt even less chatty than normal. On the way up to Joburg, I sat next to a very sophisticated lady who I noticed was reading Viktor Frankl’s Man’s Search for Meaning. Possibly, one of the most important and impactful books ever written. As we were getting ready to disembark the plane, I asked her what she thought of the book. She looked at me intently, pausing for a moment while deciding what to say, and said: “I’ve been meaning to read this book for two years now. I don’t know why I waited so long.” Apparently, her younger sister had recommended it, and the book had been lying on her bookshelf for two years. In preparing for her trip, she decided to grab the book on the way out to read on the plane. From her response, it was clear that she was annoyed with herself for waiting so long.

It got me thinking whether there is anything I had put off too long that I should’ve done something about already—a chance worth taking, a necessary ending, a cupboard that needs cleaning, or a call worth making. Today, or this weekend, might be the perfect time to do just that. Maybe this is the perfect moment or season to pull the trigger.

Hopefully, this is the nudge you were looking for!
