Nothing changes…If nothing changes

Nothing changes… If nothing changes

Some of you may be sitting on the verge of your December break, thanking your stars that there is an opportunity to reset before you enter 2026. Others of you may not be so fortunate to have a reset over the festive season. Regardless, most of us will at some point, as we enter the end of 2025, sit and wonder about what next year will hold.

I recently sat with a coaching client who said, “I cannot go into another year the same as I am. I need to be better, I need to change, something needs to change.” I think there are many of us in that same situation. Some are hopeful and positive, while others are fearful and cautious.

One thing I know for sure is that nothing changes if nothing changes. We need to manage the moments right in front of us, step by step, to move us in the direction we are hoping a new year will take.

Does this mean that unexpected things might not still happen in 2026? No, most certainly not. But I think it’s much better to remain curious rather than fearful and enter the year with a mantra that brings hope. Saying to yourself, “I have no idea what comes next, but screw it, let’s find out”, has a lot of power. It allows for endless opportunities and hope; it allows for mistakes and for learning, and ultimately, growth.

To conclude, I would like to highlight the story of two people who had absolutely no idea what would come next. The woman, told she would be having a baby without even having done the deed, in a manger waiting for the baby to be born, knowing very well that their child would be persecuted from the day of his birth and having no freaking idea what exactly would come next – Mary and Joseph. But their willingness to accept their responsibility and step out into the scary unknown meant a great deal for every single person who celebrates Christmas.

So as you enter 2026, nobody really knows how it will go, what will and won’t happen. But having an attitude that it could be whatever you make of it is definitely a great way to face it.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year – God bless you and your family.
