Pick up the coins along the way
This week, I once again noticed my youngest daughter’s amazing ability to go really slow. It makes getting her anywhere on time quite a challenge – especially for this A-type personality mommy.
But this isn’t a letter about frustration.
It’s actually about the wonder of a little girl who moves through the world noticing all the small things. The other day, I watched her walking on the beach, completely lost in her own world. She explored at her own pace and eventually came back with multiple coins she had picked up along the way. Imagine what she would find with a metal detector! So many people had walked past those same coins on their way to wherever they were going. She regularly brings me little treasures she has found. (Note from PJ: I regularly pick up 10c coins wherever I go, even when running. One day, I will buy a Ferrari with all of them!)
Here are the personal lessons I took from this:
• You will get to where you’re going whether you rush or not.
• Life is full of treasures if you’re willing to slow down and notice them.
• Having a goal to focus on is a wonderful way to get your feet moving. But if the only focus is the end point, we miss the climb, the journey, and the moments that create lasting memories.
Few people remember the exact moment they cross the finish line (it passes in an instant), but they do remember what it took to get there and the people who helped them along the way.
This Easter weekend, spend time making memories with the people you love. Go slow. Enjoy the ride. We’re all heading toward the same endpoint.
