Pick your spot and keep going!

Having worked in consulting positions for more than a decade, we know how insanely pressurized this last part of the year can get. And it’s not like we’ve been on a free ride up to this point – the second round of 2020 has been tough to say the least.

An ex-colleague shared some valuable advice once, aimed at getting through this last part of the year. He said that you should pick an imaginary spot in the near future to look forward to. Make it a physical spot or a specific day. And imagine what you want to feel and experience when you are in that moment.

Let’s use an example: Imagine it’s Christmas morning and where you are likely to be on that special day. You get up early and make yourself a nice coffee. You sit on the coach, the beach, the floor and reflect on the year that has passed. Be specific, think of the details: what is it likely to look like, smell like, what are you likely to hear and what will the air feel like? In that moment will you feel proud of the effort you put in or will you feel like there was more you could do? Remind yourself of that image regularly, particularly when you feel like taking your foot off the pedal or taking a shortcut.

This is part of a technique called visualization, something that professional athletes have used for years. Like Willie and Cheslin undoubtedly used to get through the many grueling training sessions on their way to having those winners medals around their necks.

You feel tired now. We all do. But we’re not quite done yet. Don’t slow down now. Don’t lose the race down the last straight. How you finish matters. Aim to be proud of what you’ve done. We’re almost there, you can do this. Pick your spot, keep going!

As always, thank you for reading and ending your week on a high.
