Traditionally, observers would light two candles for the duration of the day. Although many interpretations do exist, one I found deeply meaningful: The candles represent the two temples that were destroyed in Jerusalem. They remind us that buildings can crumble and that is not where the meaning of life is. What matters most, according to this tradition, is the time spent with loved ones.
The year is cracking on. For some, it feels like it should be next year already. Sleep, eat, work, repeat. Life by default turns into a rat race, but we need to remember that “buildings” can crumble. We need to regularly check our foundation to ensure it is still solid.
It often happens that my weekends get so packed with activities that they feel the same as the rest of the week. This leaves me collapsing into Monday, without so much as taking a breath to recover.
I think making a habit of spending time with loved ones, away from the world and reflecting on the week (for just one day a week), is a beautiful practice. I’m trying to be more mindful to put away the distractions and spend good quality time together. It is good for body, mind and soul.
This weekend, why not try to take a break from the rest of the world? Even if it is just for half a day. And see what you feel like on Monday.
