Silence

Silence

This week, I attended a silent church service for the first time. The idea behind it is to create space in the normal course of our lives to reflect on the significance of the events leading up to Easter weekend. Not knowing what to expect, it felt strange sitting in the church with nothing happening – no band, no pastor, no program. Just me with my thoughts, worries and questions. No phone, no agenda, no distractions – only small groups of attendants scattered around the building, silently minding their thoughts, worries and questions.

The unease and awkwardness quickly made space for a sense of calm and peace, which was very welcome. It was almost like I was re-remembering the value of silence.

Easter weekend always feels like the first major oasis of rest after the whirlwind start to the year. This weekend, if you can, take a break from everything and spend 30 minutes in silence. No phone, no agenda, no distractions. Just for you.
