Thank you

There is a reason why many parents teach their kids to say thank you and please as soon as they can say mama and papa. I think the reason runs much deeper than manners. I believe it is because the impact of saying a sincere thank you can change the trajectory of a person’s day. It can influence their future contributions and commitment. e all want to go through this life feeling seen!

Feeling underappreciated seems to be a consistent theme in conversations I have been having of late. When I ask people what they need to feel empowered and capable to fulfil their responsibilities, the answer is usually “I need my boss, my parents, my spouse or kids, or my co-workers to appreciate me”. Essentially they need a thank you.

Showing appreciation is about recognising an individual for their contribution, sacrifice and willingness to show up. We often do it subtly or assume people know we appreciate them. Reality check: people are so busy surviving this time of the year that the subtleties tend to go unnoticed. You don’t have to give them something or make a big gesture. It really is as simple as 1. Saying thank you 2. For something specific, they do or mean to you.

Appreciation links to gratitude and gratitude links to happiness. This festive season, give the gift of thank you. If you want to make the people around you truly happy, say thank you in a sincere and specific way!
