This December, be where your feet are

It’s 9 December. We did it – another year successfully navigated. Give yourself a pat on the shoulder. Was it perfect? Absolutely not. At the time of writing, we are in Stage 6 loadshedding, but hey at least we don’t have to wear masks anymore! That must rank in the top 5 highlights for the year.

This year, like all those that came and went before, had its ups and downs. Deaths and births, endings and new beginnings, war and healing. Ebb and flow. Three steps forward in one area of life, two steps back in another. That is the human experience.

That being said, with the right mindset, any experience can become valuable, whether it was fun or not.

As we wrap up this year, please consider these two points:

1. Do not let this year go to waste. During the last three weeks of the year, take the time to reflect on what you have learned: about yourself, your ability to adapt, to handle change, stress, and uncertainty, about those closest to you and humankind in general. Think about what was good, what could have been better and who or what you are grateful for. Think about where you moved forward and where you went back. And in case you missed last week’s post, think about what you could become. This year was a learning experience, so take the time to celebrate the progress you have made even if it was incremental. Any progress matters!

2. Be where you are. Wherever you go this month and whoever you spend your time with, be there. Just for a short while forget about the future, the past, the shoulda-woulda-coulda-s. Be where you are. Spend quality time with the people you are with, whether by choice or not. Spend quality time on your own. Take in the experience. Use all your senses. Catch your mind when it wants to wander to the places you have no control over and bring it back to where you are. To the best of your ability be present. As an experiment put a rubber band around your arm as a reminder and each time you notice it ask yourself: what can I feel with the soles of my feet or what do I hear, what do I smell? Use it as a reminder to ground yourself and be where you are.

As we end this year we would like to thank you for your continued support, whether you’ve only recently starting reading or have been on this ride with us for a while. We regard it as a privilege and honour to share our thoughts every week and we truly appreciate your attention.

From PurposeWorks (PJ & Shinell) we wish you a blessed Christmas and a very happy new year. We’ll be back in early 2023.

God bless you and your loved ones.
