Time for a shake-up!
This past week will probably go down as one of the most exciting of the year because of the snowfall experienced across large parts of the country. It was really fun to witness the joy felt by many as they posted videos and pictures or shared their stories on the radio or TV about witnessing this very uncommon event. Some people actually told us that they struggled to get any work done on Monday, because of the excitement and constantly looking through the window! One of the coolest videos was seeing snowmen being built on Ellis Park where the Springboks will play in a couple of weeks’ time. Truly memorable!
This got me thinking about the invigorating effect that experiencing something different can have – and since we are halfway through the year and in the middle of winter, it might be exactly the right time to shake things up a bit. To be clear, we have often spoken about the importance of routine and implementing good systems before. The idea is not to abandon what you have been working towards. Rather, it’s an invitation to review your daily routines and habits to see what you could drop or include to add a bit more joy, peace, or fulfilment to your life. It doesn’t have to be something big, life-changing, or expensive – any change can be as good as a holiday.
Here are some examples if you need a bit of inspiration:
- Take a different route to work or rearrange your office if you work from home
- Change your hairstyle
- Paint your nails a different colour
- Make a change to your morning routine, introduce a new routine, or drop something that’s not serving you anymore
- Buy a houseplant (and try your best to keep it alive)
- Try a different class at the gym or run a different route
- Sleep on the other side of the bed
- Change the backgrounds on your PC and phone
- If you cook, introduce a new recipe to your repertoire
- Start a new tradition with your family, like boardgame Thursday or screen-free Wednesday, or work colleagues (like having lunch together)
- Brush your teeth with your other hand or while standing on one foot
- Take up a new hobby you always wanted to try or sign up for a new challenge
- Try wearing a new fragrance or cologne
- Download a couple of albums you haven’t listened to before or listen to a new podcast
- Or if all else fails, buy a new pair of shoes (a personal favourite)!
If your habits and routine are serving you well at this stage, then this post isn’t for you. But if you have the need to freshen things up a bit, let this be the inspiration you need to get going. You don’t have to go on an extended European holiday to get out of a rut. Try making small tweaks to reinvigorate your sense of enthusiasm, joy, and excitement. Not only will you feel better, but you will also prove to yourself that you are someone who is capable of change – and that is not nothing!
Thank you for reading again this week, we appreciate it so much. Please share this piece with anyone that could benefit from changing things up a bit. Let’s hope the Springboks can change their fortunes in Auckland this weekend. GO BOKKE!!
Have a great weekend.
