Which Circle Are You Focused On?
Which circle is taking up most of your energy?
Resilience is a word you hear often these days. In short, resilience is your ability to bounce back from set backs or failures, big or small. What you do and how you respond when things don’t go according to plan. Resilience has been a very important characteristic to develop this year, since very little has gone according to plan. Many among us are wondering “what can I do to keep going through this challenging end of year period?”
One characteristic of people that are very resilient is their ability to draw the distinction between what concerns them and what they can and should do something about – their influence.
There is an endless list of things that can concern you. Each day the list seems to get longer. But there is another, much shorter list, that you should be paying more attention to. This is the list of things you have direct influence over.
What could easily happen is that we spend so much time and energy focused on all of the concerning things, that we fail to pay any attention to the things we can do something about. Now might be the best time to turn that around.
Over this coming weekend, try the following approach: Whenever a worrying thought crosses your mind, identify which circle it fits into. If it is a concern you can do nothing about, acknowledge that and try to let it go. If it is something you can have some influence over, think of the best plan of action and start applying the necessary steps.
The Take-Away
You cannot change the world. You cannot shoulder this responsibility on your own. Rather, focus on what you can do. Focus on what you can influence. Then start doing something about that, today.
