Who makes your list of acknowledgments?
Holy smokes, it’s the last Friday of November!
As I write this piece, I’m also in the process of finalising a project that has kept me busy for the better part of this year. The final piece involves compiling a list of acknowledgements, naming everyone who played a big or small part in helping me along the way. This piece of work will bear my name, but I am in no way the sole contributor to it.
This got me thinking more broadly about everyone who played a positive part in my life this year. Life, too, is no solo effort. And I think it would be cool to tell those people what they contributed and why they matter to me.
Perhaps you would also like to do this?
As we enter the season of giving, much of our attention is devoted to selecting the perfect gift for the most special people in our lives. Why not add to that with a sincere, heartfelt compliment and thank you?
Think about who:
- encouraged you when you felt like giving up
- gave you a hug when you were down
- celebrated with you when you won
- held you accountable when you were not being your best you
- trusted you to take the step up
- made you laugh when you were in a foul mood
- told you they were proud of you when you felt unsure of yourself
- showed up consistently when it would have been easier to stay away
- said they loved you when you needed it the most.
You get the picture. Does anybody come immediately to mind? Tell them why they matter to you.
I can hardly think of a more meaningful gift than hearing you make a significant positive impact on somebody else’s life.
One of the coolest moments of the past weekend happened when Malcolm Marx was presented with the Men’s 15’s World Player of the Year Award by Victor Matfield in the Boks change room after their victory over Ireland in Dublin. Marx, a monster of a rugby player, was visibly shy as his teammates went berserk in celebrating his achievement. The first thing he said after accepting the trophy from Matfield was, “You cannot do anything without this team”. Spot on, Malcolm!
