Why does everything suck these days?
Did you also notice how everything sucks these days?
Load shedding.
The Proteas (despite winning all their warm-up matches, 4/5 matches in the T20 World Cup and working for a completely incompetent employer).
The petrol price.
Ongoing COVID regulations.
Election results.
The way the Springboks play, despite the team winning more often than not.
The weather.
The past.
The future.
The present.
Everything. Everybody. Sucks.
All the time.
This is the view of the world you will get if you spend more than 2 minutes on Twitter, listen to most talk radio shows, read the comments sections on news platforms, Facebook or Instagram or tune into the hourly news bulletin. Mostly hate, hopelessness, and vitriol. And you will be completely convinced of this reality, since everyone sharing their opinion is an “expert”.
A truly sad and very incomplete way of viewing the world.
Yes, some of these issues are real. But they do not reflect the whole truth.
When was the last time you witnessed something spectacular? Something done with care, excellence, and pride? When last did you look at something and think to yourself “Now THAT was cool!”
You might be surprised to hear this, but good things still occur. Many millions of people are still doing great things every single day. They make selfless decisions, cook great meals, smile at and care for others, play great music, run impactful businesses, show up on time and do their best, say thank you and mean it, make their beds and clean up after themselves, make things better than the way they found them. Every day.
Here is your challenge for the coming week:
Identify and pay attention to something great. Look for it. Be obsessed about finding something worth devoting your attention to. Something that inspires you. Anything that makes you feel proud to be human.
Rock music can be one of those things, for example. This guy, Rick Beato listens to familiar songs and finds new appreciation for them. Check out this video.
It might not change the world in a massive way, but you’ll feel better. And it might convince you that everything, in fact, does not suck.
As always, thank you for reading and ending your week on a high.
