When Life Goes Uphill

When Life Goes Uphill

The idea of obedience or remaining disciplined whilst suffering is something I came across again recently in my reading. I have also experienced it through numerous challenges this past year – my own and those of others close to me. I am no fan of suffering unnecessarily, but suffering for a cause sounds rather noble don’t you think?

Thank you

Thank you

There is a reason why many parents teach their kids to say thank you and please as soon as they can say mama and papa. I think the reason runs much deeper than manners. I believe it is because the impact of saying a sincere thank you can change the trajectory of a person’s day. The last Friday of November has dawned on us, all-of-a-skielik! I seriously have no idea how it happened…

Black Friday has become a massive highlight for many this time of year. Probably half of the emails I’ve received over the last two weeks have promoted some or other massive savings (I do need some new running socks, after all). Yesterday, Shinell shared a very interesting list with me: The Top 10 Most Shared podcast episodes of the year thus far. I’m not sure if this is for the United States only, nor have I listened to any of these episodes myself, but what struck me was the topics of these episodes.

Intentional Attention

Intentional Attention

Driving on the highway the other day, my husband noted how distracting (and potentially dangerous) these new video billboards are. Marketers and advertisers must get increasingly creative about competing for our attention amidst all the “noise” competing for it. And it’s not just advertising. Smartphones generally and social media platforms specifically are designed with the single goal of grabbing and holding our attention for as long as possible. According to a quick Google search, the average person spends 3 hours and 15 minutes on their phone daily, checking it anywhere between 58 to 144 times per day (depending on which article you click on). It is no surprise so many people, if not all of us, struggle with focus and attention.

The one thing we can all be great at

In last week’s piece, we shared thoughts and practical advice on what some people we know are doing to enhance their mental health and overall sense of well-being. We asked the community to share what they have been doing to take care of themselves; the feedback we got was very specific. Then on Saturday evening, sitting around with some friends after a padel match, one person shared what he had been focusing on: the same topic. And as I sat down this morning to write this piece, the first thing I saw on LinkedIn was the same topic again…
